How To Get Started On Social Media The Right Way!

Are you ready to get started on social media? It’s no secret that one of the fastest way to grow your business and brand online is to leverage the power of social media.

When getting started on social media, you have a million options…facebook, instagram, tiktok, twitter, linkedin, and youtube. The problem is, how do you choose which platform to grow? How do you get started on social media the RIGHT way when you are brand new?

Today I’m going to share with you how to get your business started as a beginner…

If we’ve never met, my name is Brooke Amber and I teach burnt-out healthcare professionals how to launch, grow, and automate a business online so you can ditch the stress and create a life of freedom doing what you love!

How To Get Started On Social Media The Right Way!

You know, choosing a platform was one of the hardest choices for me to make.  It’s so easy to feel like you need to be EVERYWHERE all the time.  I definitely made this mistake in the beginning but I learned to tailor back until I started to get the hang of things.

I want to share with you my top tips for getting started on social media so I can hopefully help you avoid any mistakes that I made.

Social Media Growth Tip #1: Choose the right social platform.

I understand that there are so many platforms to choose from. If you attempt to dive into all of them at once, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed. You will also probably end up quitting before you ever even get started.

Algorithms are difficult to tackle and understand, let alone having to compete on so many levels with success.

This is going to look different for everyone as we are all in different stages of our journey and have different audiences. What works for me, might not work for you, and thats okay!

As you choose a platform, you will want to evaluate the TYPE of content you like to create and the age of your audience. For example:

get started on social media
  • Do you like video?
  • Education?
  • Are you looking for longevity?
  • Are you seeking to provide searchable content?
  • Do you enjoy entertaining?
  • Younger crowds = Tiktok & Instagram
  • Older crowds = Facebook
  • Professional crowds = LinkedIn

This doesn’t mean you won’t find both demographics on all these platforms. It’s just something to consider and be aware of as you plan your content.

Once you choose a platform, you will need 3 things:

  1. You will need to have a solid profile – One that CLEARLY states who you are and how you help your target audience.
  2. You will need a good close up image of your face – Try to use the same profile picture on all platforms. DO NOT…I repeat, DO NOT put a picture of a flower or your dog. Nobody cares and nobody will follow you. In fact, they will probably think your account is a hacked account.
  3. List the benefits of why someone would want to follow you. This includes how you can help someone who lands on your profile. What are they going to get from following you?

Social Media Growth Tip # 2: Start Creating Valuable Content

When you feel like comparing yourself to other influencers, I want you to remember this:

  • We all started at zero!
  • The influencers you see now got so big by providing content that solved a problem for their audience.
  • They shared value consistently.
  • Those influencers most likely stalked their competition to glean ideas. Then, they simply put their own spin to it. You should do the same!

PRO TIP: Use the websites Answer The Public or Buzzsumo to find content related to your target audience.

Social Media Growth Tip #3: Connect With People

The best ways to connect with others is to send a friend request, follow them, engage with their content, post genuine comments, and like their content.

If you don’t know the person, try building a relationship first before just asking them to be your friend.  When you are inside a private Facebook group, answer people’s questions or comment on their posts. Engage by saying hello and introducing yourself. Then send them a friend request.

Be available to respond to people who comment on your own posts.  Don’t just post and ghost. When you consistently engage, people will start naturally following you.

Social Media Growth Tip #4: Don’t get stuck on the numbers.

get started on social media

Quit judging yourself based on how many friends or followers you have. 100 loyal fans and followers will outperform 1,000 fake followers anyday. In fact, the algorithm can detect this. For example, if you have 100K followers but only 2,000 actually engage with you, this can hurt your reach in the long run because the algorithm detects how inconsistent that is.

But if you have 100 fans who all liked, commented and shared your content, the algorithm would assume that people love your material and it will show it to more people. This is what you call organic (or “free” traffic).

Social Media Growth Tip #5:  Use Attraction Marketing

To Gain A Following and Sell your product, service, or opportunity

To gain a following and sell your products, services, or opportunity, you want to use attraction marketing as your strategy. In short, attraction marketing is when you use curiosity to grab (or attract) someone’s attention. This ,in turn, prompts them to ask you for more information about your product, service, or opportunity.

Think of it this way: what would your response be if a guy walked up to you and you never met him and he said, “hey babe, will you marry me?”  Or, “Hey, let’s hook up.”

Or maybe you say, “Hey Susie, I KNOW you use toothpaste because we all use toothpaste. Want to buy mine?”

You would be disgusted, offended, turned off, annoyed or probably ticked off.  I would be.  What you need to do is date your audience.

Develop that know-like-trust factor by offering free valuable content. Do this without asking for anything in return as far as a purchase goes.

Now, it is important to have some type of call to action. However, it does not have to be one that requires them to pull out their wallets (yet). It can be as simple as asking them to like or comment if they find value in what you’re sharing.

Before long, people will start saying, “wow, she offers all this amazing content for FREE?!  I can only imagine how good her paid content is.” Eventually they will be ready to buy from you once you do have something to sell!  But you must build a connection first.
